I remember the night. She and my aunt went to a formal event, a dinner and dance. They told me and my similarly aged cousin it was a ball. We were five or six. They both dressed in black and I remember my aunt’s dress made her look like a mermaid. Fishtail style. My mum, dressed in an A-line lace number with her bob and red lipstick, looked wonderful. She carried a tiny velvet draw-string bag with beads embellished on the outside, which she later gave me. I still have it. The next day, we begged them each for the tiny miniature lipsticks they had been given as a gift at the dance. I got one.
